Eternal Return
2022
Painting, performance, video and installation
This project was inspired by the symbol of the "door". I chose
one of the connotations of "door" - "the beginning and key of
things" to create this work. I took several daily shots, which
symbolize every instant in the eternal cycle. I selected five
shots and reconstructed them using oil painting techniques
to display a slow playback of the flash. It is a paradox that I
devote real time to reminiscing virtual moments.
I recorded several shots of "doors" by animation and
photography and edited them into a short film. In the end, I
suspended the five canvases in a row and shot them
through with a bow and arrow, echoing the video's ending.
In addition, I made an interactive installation. The three doors
represent "past", "present" and "future" respectively. When
the audience enters the installation and is in the "present"
position, "past" and "future" are closely linked because of
the penetration of "present". "Past" draws on "future" and
"future" reshapes "past". When the audience leaves, the
absence of "present" makes "past" and "future" become
isolated and meaningless existences.
